Theiss was famous for his imaginative use of unusual materials and fabrics in his futuristic and alien costumes. These pieces of textured vinyl are believed to have been cut from dining room placemats, before they became Elasian body armor. This type of textured vinyl may also have been used on the Tholian head puppet, made by Mike Minor, for "The Tholian Web" from Star Trek: The Original Series
