The field of this carpet with the overall spiralling palmette vine with a continuous gentle meander, has been developed from the group of early Safavid Persian floral carpets now generally attributed to Isfahan (cf. Lot 34). The Persian prototypes have a couterposed design that is symmetrical along both axes. The Indian examples, while using almost identical motifs, with the exception of the cloudbands, also include an additional floral blossom surrounded by two cusped leaves. A similar border design can be seen depicted in a carpet illustrated in an early 17th century Indian miniature in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (Inv.no.I.M.124-1921).
