A KHORASSAN CORRIDOR CARPET
NORTH EAST PERSIA, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

The indigo field with a very finely proportioned and coloured herati pattern, in a brick-red turtle-palmette and flowering vine border between golden yellow linked flowerhead and minor plain stripes, areas of wear, some severe, areas of repiling, slight damage to ends and sides, very small repairs, one end with some staining
Approximately 16ft.10in. x 7ft.8in. (513cm. x 234cm.)

Warp: white cotton, Z3S, slightly undulating, slightly depressed
Weft: 3 shoots; grey-white and blue cotton, Z2S; 1 and 3 undulating, 2 strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2, asymmetrical open to the left, H5.1 X V 4.8/cm.
Sides: foundation shoot bound, flat woven, with two additional warp threads; additional red wool shoot, Z2S irregularly wound around two or three warp threads
Remarks: Jufti knots partly displaced

While the condition of this carpet is disappointing, the superb quality of the design clearly shows through. It typifies the early Qajar taste for carpets with finely drawn overall designs, as evidenced by many oil paintings of the period.

Both the border and guard stripes on this carpet are almost identical to those of lot 60. For a discussion of the group see the note to that lot.
