A KHOTAN CARPET
EAST TURKESTAN, CIRCA 1880
The deep indigo field with three lilac and tangerine roundel medallions flanked by floral sprays, urns issuing fruiting pomegranite trees, cloudband and butterflies and maze-work spandrels, in a lilac floral meander border between swastika maze-work inner and stylized wave-and-cloud outer stripes, geometric guard stripes, heavy wear, areas of tinting, reselvaged, areas of repairs, repaired slits
Approximately 12ft. 11in. x 7ft. 3in. (394cm. x 221cm.)
Warp: white cotton Z7-9S, considerably depressed, slightly undulating, sometimes at the edges slightly depressed and undulating, becoming even more so in the piled areas
Weft: 3 shoots, first and third dark brown wool Z1 slightly undulating, second shoot white cotton Z8 or dark brown wool Z1 strongly undulating although sometimes less so
Pile: wool, Z2S, asymmetrical open to the left, H2.9 x V2.3/cm.
Remarks: all the wool in the carpet is extremely fine
