A FRAGMENTARY KURDISH RUG
CIRCA 1880
Having polychrome bands of stylized geometric floral motifs some enclosing bicolored diamonds with ascending branches overall within a cream border of polychrome latched hourglass palmettes and stylized floral vinery, with plain kilim skirt upper end, missing lower end, probably fragmentary, minor losses, reselvaged
Approximately 8ft.4in. x 5ft.6in. (253cm. x 168cm.)
Warp: wool, ivory, light brown with ivory threads, or 1 strand ivory with one strand light brown containing ivory threads, Z2S, considerably undulating
Weft: 2 shoots, wool, ivory, light brown with ivory threads or chocolate-brown, Z2S, slightly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2S, symmetrical inclining to the right H3.2 x V1.6/cm.
Sides: additional wool weft, red, blue, yellow, green or chocolate-brown, Z2S, flat-woven around twelve additional warps, sometimes soumac woven only in the blue wool, the main weft flat-woven with the additional warps, balancing shoots next to the rows of knots
Upper end: plainwoven with wool Z2S, approx 0.5cm. ivory then 7cm. yellow
