A GHIORDES 'TRANSYLVANIAN' PRAYER RUG
WEST ANATOLIA, CIRCA 1800

The abrashed brick-red mihrab beneath a pale indigo column supported arch with a central hanging floral lamp and surmounted by a brick floral meander reserve, all within a medium indigo border of polychrome palmettes supported by curling leaves and floral vine, multiple floral and geometric guard stripes, extensive rewoven areas, other areas of repair, rewoven ends, reselvaged
Approximately 5ft.11in. x 4ft.4in. (180cm. x 132cm.)

Warp: white wool, Z2S, slightly depressed, slightly undulating
Weft: 2 shoots, sometimes 3, red wool Z1, first (and third) undulating, second more so
Pile: wool, Z1, symmetrical inclining to the left, H3.4 x V3.9/cm.
Remarks: lazy lines, now sewn together

Lot Essay
