AN USHAK MEDALLION CARPET
WEST ANATOLIA, LATE 17TH/EARLY 18TH CENTURY
The tomato-red field with ton-sur-ton blue angular palmette vine around a central shallow flaming hexagonal medallion containing scrolling arabesques and vine, a similar medallion at each end, the sides with four part green cusped panelled arabesque medallions, in a blue border of palmettes issuing flowering vine between yellow S-motif and red stellar flowerhead stripes, some wear, extensively repaired, green and brown repiled
Approximately 12ft.3in. x 6ft.3in. (373cm. x 191cm.)
Warp: ivory wool, Z2S, sometimes one strand ivory and one brown, slightly depressed, undulating
Weft: red wool, Z1, two to four shoots changing irregularly, the first and third undulating, the second and fourth strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2, knots symmetrical inclined to the left, H2.3 x V3.5/cm. Remarks: lazy lines
