EAST TURKESTAN, THIRD QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
The field with a row of ten prayer niches, the blue field of each with a stylised flowering tree, the cusped blackcurrant-red mihrab arch containing a variety of flowerheads, rosettes or cruciform motifs, the arches divided by and with an inner blackcurrant-red border of angular vine, in a lemon-yellow border of angular meandering hooked vine between narrow plain stripes, plain outer stripe, some wear, light brown and darker blackcurrant red with some corrosion, minute touches of repiling
Approximately 11ft.10in. x 2ft.8in. (360cm. x 81cm.)
Warp: ivory cotton Z7S, considerably depressed, slightly undulating
Weft: 3 shoots, first wool, brown, white, or brown and white, Z1, second and third, ivory cotton Z5S, first and third shoots slightly undulating, second strongly undulating
Pile: wool, Z2-3S, occasionally Z4S, asymmetrical open to the left, H.33 x V2.8/cm.
Sides: red wool Z2-4S wound around two additional warps, the second and third main weft flat woven around the two warps, the first weft travels over the second and thid and passes between the two additional warps
Lower end: approx. 1cm. flatweave with ivory cotton Z4S
