Lot Essay

This rug is a later example but very similar in design to one in the McMullan Collection (McMullan, Joseph V.: Islamic Carpets, New York, 1965, no.47, pp.192-193). The former has exactly the same layout but with an extra row of medalloins and trees, together with a slightly more spacious proportion. The border of the McMullan rug, unlike in the present example, is plain within the zigzag stripes. The central four medallions in this rug contain a design more frequently found in bag faces but also occasionally seen on Kazak rugs as the major motif (cf. Christie's New York, 16 December 1994, lot 148).
