James Dalziell Dougall patented the 'lockfast' action on 7 May 1860 (British Patent No. 1128). He worked in Edinburgh from 1842 to 1893, the year of his death, with a London retail office from 1862 to 1881 in St. James's Street, and thereafter at 8 Bennet Street. He was author of several successful books on shooting including Scottish Field Sports (1861) and Shooting Simplified (1857 and 1865)
