A CASED COLT 1851 MODEL NAVY PERCUSSION REVOLVER

With blued octagonal sighted barrel stamped with New York address, cylinder with Naval engagement scene (worn), case-hardened frame, silvered trigger-guard and grip-strap, the latter engraved 'Captn J.S.A. Herford', varnished walnut grips, matching numbers (barrel wedge unnumbered), and some original finish: in fitted oak case, probably original, lined in green velvet, with some accessories, the lid with printed Directions for Loading and Cleaning (escutcheon missing)

Lot Essay

Captain Ivan S.A. Herford was commissioned in the 90th Regiment of Foot (Perthshire Volunteers) (Light Infantry) in 1855 and attained the rank of Captain in 1860, retiring from the army a year later. As a lieutenant he served in the Crimea, and was present at the siege of Sebastopol and the assault on the Redan
