Lot Essay
Sir Jeremiah Colman, head of the well-known mustard firm, had an outstanding collection of Victorian pictures, of which two, Alma-Tadema's Finding of Moses and Briton Riviere's Night Watch, were sold by Christie's last year. Other major works included Burne-Jones's Love and the Pilgrim (Tate Gallery), The Cat's Paw by Landseer (private collection) and the second large version of Watts's Hope (private collection). Unfortunately, when the collection was dispersed at Christie's in 1942, such pictures were at the nadir of fashion and wartime conditions prevailed. A fine Waterhouse, Lamia, went unrecognised, and Love and the Pilgrim fetched the ridiculous sum of 20 guineas.
