CONTEMPORARY GREEN STRAIGHT-GRAINED MOROCCO GILT BOUND FOR PRESENTATION TO EMPEROR FRANCIS I OF AUSTRIA, covers with centrally-placed stamped double-headed imperial eagle with a central oval tooled with initials F.I., with neo-classical border of sphinxes, tripodal braziers, griffins, nymphs flanking lyres, interspersed with leafy scrolls and floral tools, between broad and narrow fillets, flat-backed spine divided into six compartments, lettered in two, the others gilt, gilt turn-ins, g.e. (spine very slightly faded). Provenance: Emperor Francis I of Austria (binding).

A CHARMING MILANESE NEO-CLASSICAL BINDING, by an atelier which had also worked for Eugène de Beauharnais; a binding which shares several tools was also in the third Leuchtenberg Sale (Milan, 1935). The work is a record of the annual prizes awarded to the industries of Milan, with a discourse on the prosperity of the agriculture of Lombardy by Angelo Cesaris.
