Decorated in underglaze blue with a band of circular panels containing geometric patterns, flowers and landscapes, beneath a band of jyu and fuku characters, the lower body divided into panels alternatingly filled with geometric patterns and landscapes, Shonzui style, the waist with chocolate bands in relief, the cover with circular panels similarly decorated, loop finial

Lot Essay

Koto-yaki was started as the kiln of the Ii clan in Hikone of Omi province (Hikone city, Shiga prefecture) by the 14th generation, Naotora in 1842. In 1850, the 15th generation Naosuke succeeded and promoted the production of the ware until the kiln was closed in 1862.
