SIGNED MINAMOTO SUKEMUNE, MID 17TH CENTURY
The blade honzukuri, deep torii-zori, itame hada with extended chugissaki, midare hamon of nioi with some nie, hakikake boshi, ubu nakago signed Sunshu Shimada ju Harima Daijo Minamoto Sukemune, 51.9cm.; in its ribbed dark red lacquer saya, iron otafuku-mokkogata tsuba, dark shibuichi fuchi-kashira, kozuka, koiguchi, kojiri, kurikata and uragawara all carved with waves and inlaid with a South Sea Island coral diver in shakudo, gilt details, shakudo and copper menuki of a coral diver and coral, the tsuba and fuchi-kashira, signed Omori Terumitsu and kao, the uragawara signed Omori Terumitsu on a gold panel, the kozuka signed Shinohara kyuken no motome ni oite, Bunka sen hei-in (Hinoe-tora) chushu, Omori Terumitsu kyusho sen shi, dated Bunka 3rd year (1806), the tsuka bound with whalebone and lacquered dark green

Lot Essay

The mounts were made to the order of Shinohara Kyuken. Omori Terumitsu (c. 1800) was the fifth son of Omori Teruhide (Eishu) and fourth master of the Omori school. Genuine Omori mounts with the wave design are scarce in the West.
