Lot Essay

These 'metamorphic' stool/steps would have been designed to accompany John Lloyd Wynne's 'Library Bookcase' (lot 234) and it corresponds to Gillows' 1805 sketch-pattern for a cloth-covered 'Library Stool and Step Ladder' (preserved in the Westminster Library MSS, no. 1766). The latter was executed for the 1st Marquess of Sligo (d. 1809). For a set of chairs probably supplied by Gillows to Lord Sligo, see lot 106 in this sale.
