The crest is that of Lowther, presumably for Sir William Lowther, 2nd Bt., (d.1763) M. P. for Pontifract from 1729 until 1741. On his death the title became extinct and his estates passed to his cousin The Rev. William Lowther (1707-1788) who was later created a baronet in 1764. His eldest son William was created 1st Earl of Lonsdale in 1807.
