Lot Essay

In this image Richard Avedon is showing Fred Astaire how to act like a photographer for his role as a fashion photographer who discovers a young woman played by Audrey Hepburn and turns her from a bookseller into a sensational fashion model. The role of Fred Astaire was very much based on the photographer Richard Avedon. The story was made into a musical directed by Stanley Donen with a score by George Gershwin.
