MAW, George (1832-1912). A Monograph of the Genus Crocus... with an Appendix on the Etymology... by C.C.Lacaita. London: Harrison & Sons, Benjamin Fawcett, Dulau & Co., 1886.

4° (306 x 248mm). Double-page coloured map, 2 double-page distribution tables, 81 fine hand-coloured plates lithographed by F.Huth of Edinburgh after Maw, numerous wood-engraved vignette views after drawings by C.G.Danford. Contemporary green morocco gilt, g.e. (spine slightly discoloured, slight sunning of upper cover, extremities lightly scuffed). Provenance: Hugh Ker Colville (armorial bookplate, altered in manuscript to); Magdalen Colville.

FIRST EDITION. "A many-sided and remarkable man, Maw was not a botanist by profession but a chemist and geologist, a manufacturer of encaustic tiles... His monograph, the result of ten years of inquiry, was the most complete work of its kind that had been published on any genus. The plates... are marvels of comprehensive detail and put to shame those of many more skilled draughtsmen. From the botanical point of view this work is a landmark; and Ruskin... described the drawings for it (which are now at Kew) as 'most exquisite... and quite beyond criticism.'" (W. Blunt and W.T. Stearn The Art of Botanical Illustration, 1994, p.277). Nissen BBI 1316; Great Flower Books p.67; Stafleu & Cowan 5721.
