A Meissen Royal Armorial teabowl and saucer

From the service made for Christian VI of Denmark, the teabowl with the crowned C mirror monogram above tied palms, the reverse with figures in a harbour scene with ships to the left within Böttger lustre panels and iron-red and purple Laub-und-Bandelwerk flanked by indianische Blumen, the interior with a diaper-pattern and flowerhead panel and a band of interlocking scrollwork and flowerheads in gilt, the saucer with the Royal arms of Denmark, crowned and surrounded by the Order of the Elephant within a band of gilt scrollwork and flowerheads (some flaking to gilt rim of teabowl), blue crossed swords marks, gilder's i., Dreher's to both pieces

Lot Essay

The Service remained in the Danish Royal Collection until 1795 when it was included in a list of items saved from the disastrous fire at Christiansborg castle and transferred to Rosenborg. In 1797, it was offered as lot 7 in the sale of salvaged effects from Christiansborg.

Christian VI of Denmark, 1699-1746, married in 1721 Sophia Magdalena, daughter of Christian Heinrich Margraf von Brandenburg-Kulmbach and niece of Eberhardine von Brandenburg-Kulmbach, consort of Augustus the Strong.
