拍品專文

A rare and fascinating personal album of portraits, views and ephemera, almost certainly compiled by a woman, based in the Uttar Pradesh region. The photographs include thirteen views in India, four titled A [?Bismath] at Fattegurh, Bareilly, Nynee Tal and Cawnpore. The subjects include temple architecture and topography, two street scenes, one with a seated Indian man in the foreground, a mountain view with a bungalow in the foreground, a Gothic church at Cawnpore (Kanpur), an unidentified house among trees, three photogram leaf studies made by placing the leaves directly on the sensitised paper, one head and shoulders portrait of a seated lady, and one portrait of a gentleman captioned Major Miles. The autograph pages include the signatures of ten girls or women, members of the Jones, Owen, Brent and Hyde families, with four other signatures, three from members of the same families and one of James [?Hamilton] or [?Stanton].

The photographs in this album predate any other Indian photographs thus far recorded.
