Lot Essay

In the summer of 1900 Brangwyn was commissioned by Sir Edmund and Lady Davis to to decorate the music room and bedroom at 11 Lansdowne Road, Holland Park. The present works are possibly studies for the bedroom murals which were decorated by twelve 'painting[s] representing a month of the year, and the composition of each of these paintings was dominated by a slender, half-nude figure of a boy or girl wearing a Grecian-style robe which cascaded down in decorative folds from waist to ankle'.
(see R. Brangwyn, Brangwyn, London, 1978, p.81).
