MALLARME, Stephane (1842-1898). L'Après-midi d'un Faune. Eclogue avec frontispice, fleurons & cul-de-lampe. Paris: Alphonse Derenne, 1876.
Large 8° (283 x 195mm). One plate on india paper and one ex-libris by EDOUARD MANET, both with pink wash probably by the artist, one wood-engraved head- and one tailpiece, original grey wrappers bound in. (Lightly spotted.) Contemporary cloth by Pierson, lettered in gilt on spine (slightly soiled), brown morocco case and card slipcase by Alix.
NUMBER 7 OF 20 COPIES ON JAPON of an edition limited to 215 copies. This is probably a trial copy with the contemporary binding by Pierson, the binder of the Brothers Goncourt, which does not preserve the ticket giving the price of 15Fr, nor the two ties of pink and black silk. The colouring on the plate and ex-libris is referred to by Manet in a letter to Mallarmé, 'Il faut absolument arrêter les frais de colourage. Ce serait èpouvantable. Je me charge de les faire moi-même. Il me faut une journée'.
