Lot Essay

Saint Lawrence, who was a deacon of the church under Pope Sixtus II in the second century, was martyred on a gridiron by order of the Roman prefect, here shown watching from above. He famously remarked that he was well done on one side, and that it was time to turn him over, although in the present relief he looks more agonised than such a show of equanimity would lead one to expect.
