With an old label on the reverse indistinctly inscribed '.../Exhibited at the Art Treasures, Manchester 1857 by L. Bradley Esquire'; the reverse inscribed in ink 'D' and indistinctly in pencil '.../1616'.

The Master GVDR is known to have produced portrait ivories of British worthies after models by Rysbrack. The present relief shares many stylistic similarities with a signed relief of Cromwell which was offered in these Rooms 21 July, 1975, lot 58.
