Lot Essay

The present plaque is copied from an engraving by Jan Sadeler the Elder after Marten de Vos, which in its turn is inspired by Dürer's treatment of the subject in his woodcut from the Marienleben. A number of versions of the relief in silver are stamped with the Augsburg mark, and support the idea that the design originated there (Weber, loc. cit.).
