Lot Essay

The attribution of the present model to Grupello was first advanced by Weihrauch (1956, loc. cit.). He pointed out the connection between this piece's pendant, which represents Atalanta, and an early work by Grupello, his Diana of 1673 (for which, see Brinckmann, loc. cit.). It has been suggested that the bronzes record the appearance of a pair of lost garden statues by Grupello (Düsseldorf, loc. cit.).
