The present drawing is related to Venus and Putti on Clouds, one of four circular quadri riportati, painted circa 1680-5 for Monsignor Muti on the vault of the gallery of the Palazzo Muti-Papazzuri, Rome, G. Sestieri, Repertorio della Pittura Romana della fine del Seicento e del Settecento, Torino, 1994, II, fig. 196. The three other compositions are of Diana, Flora and Venus and Endymion.
A study for Venus is in Düsseldorf (D. Graf, Die Handzeichnungen von Giacinto Calandrucci, Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, Düsseldorf, 1986, no. 68, fig. 80) and another drawing for the same composition is in the Louvre (inv. 16111). The attribution was kindly confirmed by Dr. Dieter Graf.
