Lot Essay

The field design of this carpet, clearly inspired by the sixteenth and seventeenth century Isfahan carpets, can be seen on a number of other Axminster carpets of the period. A similar field is on the shaped example ordered by Richard Hall Clarke for Bridwel House, Uffculme, Devon, circa 1793, sold anonymously in these Rooms 11 June 1992, lot 134. Another is at Kingston Lacy, Dorset, supplied with a 'Persian design' by S.R.Whitty of Axminster on 12 October 1819 at a cost of just over sixty pounds.
