Lot Essay

We are grateful to Professor Leonard J. Slatkes for confirming the attribution from photographs. He compares the profile of the smoker to that in the Calling of Saint Matthew in the Church of Notre Dame, Bruges, datable circa 1640, and the handling of the drapery folds and still-life details to those in the Adoration of the Shepherds of 1642 in the Cathedral of Sint-Salvator, Bruges. He also compares the still-life element to that in the Meditating Philosopher, Sint-Janshospital, Bruges.
