Lot Essay

An old label attached to the stretcher identifies the sitter as Lady Mary Hay, only daughter of George Henry Hay, 8th Earl of Kinnoull. In 1758 she married John Hume (1703-1782), Bishop successively of Oxford and Salisbury.
