Following the post-war success of the 2-litre saloon, it was inevitable that Daimler would introduce a more specialised version of the DB18, known as the 2.5 litre Special Sports. When the car appeared in 1948 it was well received and much sought after for its ability to transport occupants with high speed and comfort.

The drophead body by Barker, with its handsome lines, immediately conveyed an image of sportiness and whilst the famous fluted radiator was distinctly altered, this did not detract from the Daimler marque. Both inside and out, the attention to detail was far above the standard of the day and this is especially apparent when one looks at the ease in which the hood could be operated and the clever sideways occasional seating which was employed.

Mechanically, the Special Sports was enhanced by twin carburettors and an overdrive epicyclic gearbox and produced 85bhp as against the standard 70bhp. A road test carried out by "The Motor" in June 1950 recorded a mean of four opposite flying quarter miles of 81.4mph which could only confirm the car's suitability for high speed cruising.

608 Special Sports' chassis were produced although only about 500 were given the Barker body, with the remainder having Hooper coachwork.

VYJ 344 is finished in metallic silver over blue with a blue coachline and is presented in very good condition. The paintwork is smart and panel fit good. Inside, the car retains its original blue leather upholstery which is in good order and the interior woodwork is well varnished. The blue mohair hood is relatively new and in excellent condition, as is the headlining and dark blue carpets. The underbonnet condition is very presentable and the car comes complete with original tools, jack and lubrication cans etc. Underneath, the car appears basically sound although will require a small repair to corrosion in the front inner sills.

Mechanically, the owner tells us that it is running and driving well, and recent work undertaken includes the fitting of new king pins and an overhaul of the brakes.

A sporting and comfortable open touring car which is sold with an owners handbook, V5 registration document and new MoT certificate.
