Details
FROM THE ESTATE OF THE LATE MRS OLIVIA WRIGHT
1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SE 3.5 CABRIOLET
Registration No. OW 100
Chassis No. 111027ZZ002247
Engine No.116980ZZ001887
Light blue with dark blue leather interior.
Engine: V8 single overhead camshaft, 3,499cc, 230bhp at 6000rpm; Gearbox: automatic; Brakes: all-round disc, servo assisted; Suspension: independent with coil springs, wishbones and anti-roll bar all round. Right hand drive.
The 280SE 3.5 litre cars were Mercedes' first V8 powered sports cars. A combination of elegant styling coupled with effortless performance made them highly desirable and they were every bit as prestigious as their competitors. From the outset the emphasis was on quality and the cars featured a new interior with more wood, and leather upholstery became standard. The 3.5 litre V8 engine was highly advanced, with electronic fuel injection and transistor ignition and it was a turning point in Mercedes-Benz engine manufacture. The high price that these cars retailed for ensured their relative rarity, although certainly reflected the quality and expense taken in their production. Even by Mercedes' efficient standards output was limited, thereby enhancing the car's rarity and prestige.
This 1970 example, bearing the attractive registration number OW 100, formed part of a small stable of quality motor cars owned and enjoyed by the late Mrs. Olivia Wright. Indeed, much of her motoring was undertaken by chauffeur and the Mercedes shared garaging with a drophead Rolls-Royce. We believe this car was purchased in about 1971 or '72 when it was just months old, and has been in the same recorded ownership ever since. The car has been garaged and the comparatively low mileage of 86,550 is probably genuine. The panelwork is all straight and well fitting and it is painted light blue with matching wheel trims. The interior has complementary dark blue leather seats with dark blue carpeting and door trim. The manual hood fits well and is also finished in dark blue. The car has automatic transmission and electric windows all round. The unstressed 3.5 litre engine started first time from cold with an even tickover.
A highly desirable cabriolet Mercedes which is capable of transporting four adults, with luggage, in supreme comfort and style. It comes with an MoT certificate valid until November.
