A PAIR OF GEORGE III WHITE-PAINTED AND PARCEL-GILT OPEN ARMCHAIRS
Each with a padded back, arms, seat and squab cushion covered in yellow floral silk damask, the oval channelled and beaded back with outswept serpentine arms, on beeded and channelled serpentine supports, the oval seat with a fluted seat-rail, on ring-turned tapering fluted legs with pegged construction headed by patera-centred panels, possibly reduced in height, restorations to the backs, batten carrying holes (2)

Lot Essay

This form of Louis XVI 'cabriolet' chair, with Grecian medallioned back and seat, was adopted in the 1770s by the Berkeley Square cabinet-maker John Linnell (d. 1796) for the Gobelins-tapestry chairs supplied to Robert Child (d. 1782) for Osterley Park, Middlesex (H. Hayward and P. Kirkham, William and John Linnell, London, 1980, fig. 92).
