Lot Essay

Doris 'Dodo' Grosse was Kirchner's second girlfriend while he was in Dresden between 1909 and 1911. Arguably Kirchner's most important and certainly most celebrated model, she appears in numerous single and group portraits, and in the studies of bathers which Kirchner painted during his visits to the Moritzburg lakes in 1909 and 1910. A colour pastel of 'Dodo' in a very similar pose to the present work was sold in these rooms on 4 December 1990, lot 151 (¨160,000).
