Of typical form, the pencase plain except for the gilt floral engraved terminals, one comprising the hinged cover with attachment loop, the inkwell similar with floral engraved bands top and bottom, and corner panels, with oval hinged cover with gold mount and red stone, the pencase stamped with the name Mehmed, the underside of the lid also with an engraved oval copper panel, gilding rubbed, negligible dent

Lot Essay

The inscription on the inside of the lid reads: Ya muftih al-abwab al-najir (?). It also includes what could be read as a date of 1511 or 1011. The latter would correspond to 1602-3 AD.
