Dale Johnson (exhibition catalogue American Portrait Miniatures in the Manney Collection, New York, 1990-1991, p. 167) describes Peale 'as one of the country's finest miniature painters'. In 1769, Peale became assistant to his brother Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) and by 1771 he had learnt the techniques of watercolour and oil painting that was to keep him constantly busy. Peale married Mary Claypoole, daughter of the painter James Claypoole (1720-1796) and of their seven children at least five were artists including Anna Claypoole Peale (see lots 82 and 91).
