Lot Essay

The stand, with 'pelta-shield' rest on an 'arrow' pole, relates to the Roman style 'lance and shield' polescreen illustrated in Thomas Hope's, Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807, pl.XVIII.
Another stand, acquired by the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1966 (inv. no. W.17-1966), is also decorated in pen-work with Grecian laurel-wreath and palm-flowers and bears the inscription of Pierre Erard, pianoforte and music-stand maker and his address at 18 Great Marlborough Street, London, where he was listed in the 1830's. Another stand of the same pattern but with grained decoration was sold by Mr. and Mrs. Roger Vestey, removed from Park Gate House, Ham Common, Surrey, in these Rooms, 19 June 1980, lot 73.
