20 parts in one volume, 2° (348 x 215mm). Letterpress title in red and black, otherwise engraved throughout. 140 etched plates (19 incorporating section titles) by Marot, numbered in manuscript. (Title soiled and slightly shaved, plates numbered 18, 43 and 136 torn just affecting image area, plate numbered 58 with old repaired 180mm. tear into image, some mainly marginal browning and staining, two stubs visible between plates numbered 84 and 85). Old half sheep (worn). Provenance: John Etty (?1705-1779, grandfather of William Etty, R.A., inscription 'John Etty of Yorke Carpenter his Booke').
A fine collection touching many areas of design. The largest section of designs is given over to ornamental formal gardens or parterres (24), and in addition to interior designs for staircases, chimney-pieces, beds, ceilings, cornices, metalwork, the collection also includes designs for lace, vases for the garden, gates, fountains and a coach especially designed for William III. The stubs between plates numbered 84 and 85 may be for two designs representing two of the Elements (Air and Fire) as the plates that follow them are for Earth and Water; if so, they were removed at an early stage in the book's history. The various parts almost correspond with those listed in Berlin Kat. 355 (with 18 additional plates of parterres, but lacking '5) 6 Bl. grosse Hochfüllungen, darunter die Elemente' [although two of these plates are probably present numbered 85 and 86]), in addition the collection contains two parts listed in Berlin Kat. 356 ('4) Livre de Statues... 18) Les huit grand tableaux..').
