An order for 137 of these chairs was completed by Alex Martin, cabinet maker for a number of Mackintosh's designs, in 1903, at a cost of 17/6d per chair. The strengthening top slat was added to the majority of the Tea Room chairs at a later date to prevent the original bowed slat from breaking when the chairs were lifted and moved.
