A classical Landscape with Homer and Calliope, a Man accosting Maidens carrying Fruit on a Track, Roman buildings beyond

Relatively little is known about the artist. A pupil of Jean-Baptiste Pillement, he is recorded as having exhibited at the Salon from 1791 until 1810. A similarly signed work executed in bodycolour and dated 1793 is included in the Mauerbach Benefit Sale which Christie's will be conducting on behalf of the Federation of Austrian Jewish Communities at the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna on 29 and 30 October, lot 9: although primarily an architectural drawing, the handling, particularly of the figures, is very similar to that in the present painting. Further examples of similar works are the landscape, signed and dated 'E. LeSueur à Paris 1790' which was sold at Fischer, Lucerne, 24 November 1970, lot 2101 and that which was sold at Sotheby's, 25 March 1953, lot 31.

The date of 1785 on the present picture would seem to indicate that it is the earliest known work by the artist.
