Lot Essay

Donato and his brother, Angelo, both of Greek origin, together with the Scupula brothers of Crete, settled in Otranto in Puglia in the first half of the 16th Century; there they formed a highly individual school of painting which was distinctly Byzantine in character. A portable triptych by Fabrizio Scupula was offered in these Rooms 7 April 1995, lot 187 and another similar work by his brother Giovanni Maria, signed and inscribed 'IONES MARIA SCVPVULA DE ITRUNTO PINXIT IN OTRANTO' is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (A.R. Murphy, European Paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, An Illustrated Summary Catalogue, Boston, 1985, p. 261, illustrated).
