A SHINTO KATANA IN GUNTO KOSHIRAE
Mei: Kanesada, 17th Century
The blade honzukuri, iorimune with slightly elongated medium point (chu-gissaki), slight koshi-zori, forging pattern itame and masame, tempered edge midare with some sambon-sugi, with maru-boshi, tang ubu with two holes, Mino school, 73.2cm.; encased in iron leather covered gunto scabbard, decorated with typical W.W.II mounts, metal menuki in the form of ken and a Choshu iron aoi-gata tsuba similarly carved, the kabuto-gane with sagari-fuji (hanging wisteria) mon and blue and brown tassel, 19th/early 20th Century

Lot Essay

The sword is said to have been impounded in the Okinawa campaign of spring 1945. The label belonging to this read that it belonged to Major Miyagawa Tadashi of Tokushima prefecture. It is believed the major was killed in Okinawa.
