Of eared-square shape, each corner with a foliate-enriched satyr-mask in a beaded-band above scrolling acanthus and with fruit and acorns hanging from his beard, divided by four lappeted and fluted handles with a foliate and foliage bulbous finial, stamped to the inside 'LONDON', lacking lights and hanging-chains

This oil lamp is designed in the early 19th Century antique manner, popularised by the connoisseur Thomas Hope in his Household Furniture and Interior Decoration of 1807. A closely related hanging-lantern was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 14 July 1994, lot 129 while a colza oil-lantern complete with hanging chains and foliate corona was sold on behalf of the Executors of the late Mrs. Helen Langford-Brooke, Mere Hall, Knutsford, Cheshire, Christie's house sale, 23 May 1994, lot 198.
