A left-hand dagger
Late 16th Century, probably German
With sharply tapering blade of flattened diamond section with rectangular ricasso etched with scrolling conventional foliage against a gilt ground and struck on one face with a bladesmith's mark, a letter 'P', the bright hilt comprising long straight quillons of octagonal section, widening slightly towards the flanged tips, pommel of double fleur-de-lys shape, and spirally fluted wooden grip bound with brass wire, in original tooled leather-covered wooden scabbard (repaired) incorporating a pocket for by-knives (missing) and with deep iron locket and chape, the ends each shaped as a fleur-de-lys pierced with a heart, the locket with a fixed belt loop, and the chape terminating in a turned button
