FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN. Aegidius, or Giles, of Assisi was the third companion of Francis of Assisi and his most important companion. After making pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostelo and the Holy Land, Giles led a life of work and contemplation and became famous for his mystical raptures. Among those who came to venerate Giles at his retreat near Perugia were Gregory IX and St. Bonaventura. His dictums, circulating in several recensions, deal with virtues and vices, solitude, patience, prayer and contemplation, and are reminiscent of the Apothegmata of the Desert Fathers. HR 104; GW 266; Goff A-63; Pellechet 65; IGI IV, 54-A; Sander 48; Kristeller, Florentine Woodcuts 132.
