LIMITED EDITION OF 263 COPIES, this number 35 of 220 copies on papel Japón antiguo, signed in pencil by Picasso on limitation leaf. 'As early as 1927 Gili [the father of the eventual publisher] commissioned the Tauromaquia from Picasso, and by 1929 the artist had executed six etchings and engravings, which were proofed but not published. For thirty years the project lay uncompleted, and when the artist returned to it, he discarded the etchings and employed aquatint. In contrast to the heroic style of the early proofs, in the published plates Picasso has expressed the tension and movement of the bullring with remarkable economy of means, using abbreviated and generalised shapes': The Artist and the Book 244; Cramer 100.
