Carved as a recumbent mythical beast with its right foreleg resting playfully on a small cub lying on its back, looking back over its shoulder at another animal in a similar posture, its right foreleg resting on a brocade ball, both beasts entwined in a celestial ribbon held in their mouths, their eyes inlaid with amber, the stone of a bright apple green tone with some pale and russet mottling

Lot Essay

While it is easy to find recent jadeite carvings of animals and figures, it is more difficult to find such carvings dating from before c.1900; probably because the stone was more valuable carved into jewellery.
