Lot Essay

The sitter was the second daughter of John Wood (1682-1756) and his wife, Frances (for whom see the previous lot). She married, first, Samuel Clarke of Askham Bryan, Yorkshire, whose father had been Lord Mayor of York, by whom she had a daughter Frances, who married Stephen Croft of Stillington, Yorkshire, in 1764. She married, secondly, Captain Thomas Schaak of Utrecht by whom she had a daughter, Delia, who married her first cousin Richard Wood (d.1815), in 1774.
