Marlow visited Lyon during his continental tour of 1765-66, and while abroad produced numerous sketches of the landscape and places that he visited. Many of these sketches were later turned into paintings on his return to England. The original pen and ink outline drawing for this composition is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Marlow exhibited views of The Chateau of Pierre Encise at Lyon at the Society of Artists in 1769, 1771, and 1774, and at the Royal Academy in 1794. Versions of this composition, which is datable to the 1770s, are in The Manchester City Art Gallery, The National Gallery of Scotland and The Minneapolis Institute of Art.
